Anonymous asked: Is it true that American Sign Language is (Or was at one point) racist? I heard the gestures for Jew were to point at your nose or to rub your fingers together to signify money and that the gesture for Mexican was to rub your fingers near your upper lip to represent a mustache.
Oh yeah, a lot of signs are pretty racist. The sign for Jewish is like you’re stroking a beard and they changed the sign for Mexico to be like you are touching the brim of a sombrero. There’s been some push from mostly hearing non-native signers to change signs but they don’t catch on. They aren’t really considered offensive to Deaf people, even Deaf people of color. Deaf people are also way more blunt about describing people. I’ve had culturally Deaf friends describe someone as being “the fat, brown man” and it’s just what it is. Political correctness is very different in Deaf and hearing worlds.
Gotta do what you gotta do, I suppose.
I’m not sure if I find the beard stroking hilarious, offensive, or both.
As a Deaf Jew, I think it’s hilarious. Easily one of my top ten favorite signs.
